Staff at Warburtons are set to take strike action against the UK baker after rejecting a 2% pay offer.
95% of staff rejected Warburtons’ offer and around 85% of members have voted for a ballot on industrial action, according to Ian Hodson, the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union’s (BFAWU) national president. The turnout for the ballot was 90%.
Warburtons, which operates 24 bakeries and depots in the UK, previously agreed to enter discussions on improving the offer but only if employees agreed to accepting seven changes to terms and conditions. The BFAWU argued that Warburtons did not have a mandate to agree the changes and instead instigated the consultative ballot, which has overwhelming backed strike action.
“This is a profitable company. We would not be doing this if the company was loss making,” said Hodson.
