Superba krill supplement sales boost Aker BioMarine

15 August 2012

Norwegian firm Aker BioMarine has reported record sales in the second quarter thanks to the  solid growth for its Superba dietary supplement and Qrill feed ingredient.

Aker sold 74 tonnes of krill in the second quarter as operating revenue increased from €11.96 million in the same period last year to €14.7 million. Sales for the year reached €26.1 million, up from €21.6 million in 2011.

EBITDA for the period was €3.6 million, slightly up from €3.3 million in the second quarter of 2011. Aker's said the modest increase was the result of lower harvesting volumes and costs associated with the firm's two vessels.

Aker reported strong sales growth in Asia-Pacific and the US. The firm expects to deliver full-year sales growth of around 45%, higher than 2011's 31% rise.

Aker has reported average annual sales growth of 88% since 2009 and has invested in increasing production capacity to meet rising demand for krill. The company's new vessel Antarctic Sea has fished 1,000 tonnes of krill since it came into service in June.
