The UK Flavour Association has been unveiled at a launch event in London.
Previously known as the British Essence Manufacturers Association (BEMA) and formed in 1917, the UK Flavour Association represents the interests of flavour companies and flavour ingredient suppliers in the UK and internationally.
Members are said to benefit from a coordinated response to proposed changes in UK and EU regulatory regimes and a forum for discussion of consumer and business issues that are impacting the industry.
“The membership of our organisation has changed considerably over the past few years,” comments Jane Route, Executive Committee Chairman. “So, too, have the opportunities for our industry.”
“Whatever the food or drink – from snacks and sweets, to cheese and yogurt to ready meals and baked goods - getting the flavour of the finished product is critical if consumers are to keep coming back for more. And our customers are always willing to try something new – be it Asian, fusion, exotic fruit or reduced-sugar.”
“At the same time, our members have to address challenging regulatory, technical and nutrition demands such as sodium reduction and the increased demand for natural flavourings. The UK Flavour Association is an incredibly valuable resource where our members can raise and resolve issues and know that the Association will represent their interests in the UK and internationally”
According to the Association, the flavour industry has been significantly affected in recent years by changing consumer trends and UK, European and global supply and regulatory pressures. By providing members with regular updates on legislative changes, consumer issues and indirect regulatory topics (such as food safety or excise duty), the UK Flavour Association says that it ensures that members get early warning of subjects that are likely to affect their business.
Feedback from members, allied to coordination and communication with key customer associations and influencers means, according to the organisation, that the UK Flavour Association offers an effective way for flavour companies to participate in a concentrated industry response to issues that concern them.
The UK Flavour Association is active in Europe through its membership of, and committee representation in, the European Flavour Association (EFFA), which, in turn is a member of the International Organisation of the Flavouring Industry (IOFI). All members of the UK Flavour Association conform to EFFA and IOFI Codes of Practice, ensuring the safe manufacture and use of their flavours in the UK and abroad.
