UK bakery Warburtons has announced plans to close a factory in Blackpool, Lancashire which could result in the loss of 71 jobs.
Warburtons said that it will enter a 90-day consultation on 27 September over the plans - a move which left the Bakers Food and Allied Workers Union (BFAWU) "shocked and angered". The firm cited "continued challenging economic environment and changing demands on our business” for the decision.
“The proposed changes are designed to make our manufacturing operations more efficient, which will help us better meet the demands of our customers and consumers across the UK,” said Jonathan Warburton, Warburtons' chair.
The BFAWU said that it will submit counter proposals which would keep the factory open. Reducing production to a single shift, producing smaller pack sizes and selling the bakery as a going concern are under consideration.
The site is likely to close in January next year if Warburtons' plans get the go-ahead.
