Change4Life campaign funding withdrawn08 July 2010
Food and beverage manufacturers including Coca Cola, Mars and Cadbury are all going to fund the UK's Change4life campaign as the government has announced it would be scrapping funding for it.
Public funding for the scheme will be withdrawn and, in its place, private companies, charities and local authorities will provide money for the initiative to run.
Change4life was launched by the government at the beginning of this year.
It is aimed at helping modern-day people lead less sedentary lives which leads to increasing obesity rates in the UK.
According to the campaign, nine out of ten children could grow up with dangerous levels of fat in their bodies.
Health secretary Andrew Lansley said: "We have to make Change4life less a government campaign, more a social movement.
"Less paid for by government, more backed by business. Less about costly advertising, more about supporting family and individual responses."
He said that, in order to combat obesity, commercial sector companies need to address their practices and the ways they promote their brands in order to help "reverse the trends in obesity".
