Convenience food sales increasingConsumers are spending more on convenience foods such as pre-boiled eggs and pre-sliced fruit, new figures have shown. The website mySupermarket.co.uk compared the price of a shopping basket - including pre-boiled eggs, ready-grated cheese, pre-sliced fruit, ready-chopped vegetables and frozen ready meals - among major UK retailers. It found that shoppers spend an average £63 a year on food that is ready-grated, sliced and chopped - up 14 per cent over the past 12 months. Women spend ten per cent more on convenience foods than men, the study found. The over-75s were likely to spend the most on such products at £65.95 a year, while those with young children spend an average of £63 a year. MySupermarket spokesman Jonny Steel noted that foods once considered "an absurd convenience" were now a normal part of our daily routines. "We anticipate [sales] will continue to grow as shoppers become ever more time-pressed," he added. However, health experts at the Global Nutrition Transition Conference, held in the US today (March 15th), noted that many convenience foods contained high levels of salt and sugar which could contribute to obesity and other health problems.
