General Mills products gain momentum at Wal-Mart

General Mills' products continue to grow in popularity at Wal-Mart stores, according to a research note.

The company, which makes products including Cheerios cereal and Yoplait yogurt, generates 23 per cent of its sales from the store, BMO capital markets analyst Kenneth Zaslow said.

Beating much of its competition, the company has gained market share at Wal-Mart, Food Manufacturing reported.

Its sales at the discount chain have also increased by 14 per cent in the 2010 fiscal year.

Mr Zaslow said: "US packaged food companies will either win with Wal-Mart or lose. Wal-Mart represents not only approximately 20 per cent of US packaged food sales, but also approximately one-half of the industry's sales growth."

Earlier this month, General Mills laid out a five-year growth plan that included increasing earnings per share by at least 45 per cent from current levels.

The firm said drivers of that growth include expanding in emerging markets such as China, Brazil and India and new products such as Pillsbury mini pancakes, Yoplait smoothies and chocolate Cheerios.
