General Mills UK expands Betty Crocker range

General Mills has announced plans to develop its Betty Crocker baking range in the UK in the coming year.

Andy Foweather, sales director of General Mills UK, told Talking Retail that the company plans to cash in on the growth in the home baking market by developing new products.

In 2009 the sales of General Mills baking products grew by five per cent. Cupcake mixes were also "in vogue" and experienced a 47 per cent growth in sales, according to Ed Culf, marketing director of General Mills UK.

The Betty Crocker range currently has seven products available in the UK, which are sold at most major supermarkets. It is launching a new product, the Betty Crocker Chocolate Fudge Cupcakes Mix, in mid-January and is hoping to boost sales of the Shake to Make pancake range around Shrove Tuesday.

Mr Culf said: "Pancake Day is a profitable event which is critical in terms of driving volume and value in the baking mixes category - 38.6 per cent of new category buyers... went on to buy again within the broader baking mix category."

Betty Crocker products are available in over a dozen markets worldwide.
