Michelle Obama urges food giants to cut unhealthy ingredientsMichelle Obama has called on America's largest food companies to speed up efforts to make healthier foods. Speaking at a meeting of the Grocery Manufacturers Association earlier this week, the First Lady urged industry giants to reduce their use of food ingredients such as fat, sugar and salt which can be damaging to health. In a similar vein, New York governor David Paterson recently suggested that the state may introduce a tax on sugary drinks in an attempt to cut obesity levels. Mrs Obama also recommended that marketing of unhealthy foods to children should be reduced. "We need you not to just tweak around the edges but entirely rethink the products you are offering, the information that you provide about these products, and how you market those products to our children," she said. Members of the Grocery Manufacturers Association - which includes Kraft Foods, Coca Cola and General Mills - gave Mrs Obama a standing ovation. Posted by Jason Webster ![]() | |||||||||||||||||||||
