Public 'confused' about dairy products

The UK public is confused about the health messages surrounding dairy products, a new report has revealed.

One in three adults do not understand what the health benefits of items such as cheese, milk and yoghurt are to them, the YouGov Sixth Sense report says.

Some 82 per cent of the survey's respondents know that products derived from milk are good for children but they are unsure as to where the items fit into their own diet.

Because they are natural, 65 per cent of people believe dairy products are not bad for their health.

Women realise the negative effects of dairy produce more than men, with 37 per cent of them trying to restrict their intake of the products, compared with just 26 per cent of men.

James McCoy, research director for YouGov Sixth Sense, said: "Cheese, milk and yoghurt have benefited from the lasting perception that they are 'traditional' and 'natural' and are subsequently less likely to be seen as fattening or bad for your health.

"Cream is predominantly seen as being a treat, synonymous with indulgence."

Calcium is present in high quantities in dairy produce and it is very important for the body as it helps strengthen bones and teeth as well as regulating muscle contraction, including heartbeat.
