Salmonella scare leads to shutdown at Nestle plantNestle shutdown the production line at its plant in Burlington, Wisconsin, US, after a batch of chocolate chips tested positive for salmonella. However, a spokesperson, Laurie MacDonald, has confirmed that none of the products, which were made on April 22nd, left the plant, meaning there is a no need for a recall, reports the Journal Times. Ms MacDonald added that the production line was shut down over the weekend for extra cleaning; however, production was expected to start again this week. "All this routine testing is done all the time," Ms MacDonald said. "It's costly but necessary. "Basically, the system worked. Are we happy we found it? Of course not." It is not known what caused the chips to test positive; however, Ms MacDonald told the news provider that raw agricultural products, such as cocoa beans, can carry salmonella. This is the second time this year that the Nestle plant has had a salmonella scare. In February a similar incident occurred, with routine testing highlighting the issue.
