D-Xylose commonly called wood sugar, is a natural 5 – carbon sugar (pentose) obtained from the xylan rich portion of hemicellulose from plants cell walls and fiber. It’s a white crystalline powder, very soluble in water, soluble in hot ethanol. The sweetness of xylose is about 70% of cane sugars. D-Xylose is accepted by FDA as a safe food ingredient (GRAS). In the EU xylose’s status is also food ingredient.
