Located in the scenic Amathole region of the Eastern Cape in South Africa, Essential Amathole has been established to produce a range of organic essential oils and medicinal plant extracts for the global market. The company is currently conducting trials at six sites, and will commence commercial production in 2009. The Amathole region is geographically and climatologically diverse, with rainfall ranging from 500mm per annum in the drier valleys to over 1 000mm per annum on the escarpment. This allows for the production of a varied range of essential oil crops. The company is part of the growing essential oils industry in South Africa, and brings its benefits to a part of the country that needs it most. Essential Amathole is based on an innovative community-private-public partnership model, which benefits the local community by creating sustainable jobs through the cultivation and production of essential oils and related products. It is estimated that at full commercial production the company will create 1000 permanent jobs and will bring additional income through empowerment mechanisms to families in the villages in the Tyume, Keiskamma and Kat River valleys.
