Melatonin (MT) is one of the hormones secreted by the pineal gland of the brain. Melatonin belongs to the indole heterocyclic group of compounds whose chemical name is N-acetyl-5 methoxytryptamine, also known as pinealectin, melatonin, and melatonin. After melatonin synthesis, it is stored in the pineal gland, where sympathetic excitation innervates the pineal cells to release melatonin. Melatonin secretion has a distinct circadian rhythm, with daytime secretion inhibited and nighttime secretion active.
