Roquette, Algama partner on microalgae

marine-microalgae-19077734Roquette has partnered with young French company Algama to promote the benefits to consumers of microalgae as part of a daily diet. What Roquette describes as pioneering food products formulated with microalgae ingredients will be presented at the Universal Exposition in Milan this October.

“For two weeks, we will be presenting practical solutions to help feed the world’s population with healthy food. Nine billion people will have to be fed by 2050 – which means that we need to start innovating now,” said Algama co-founder Alvyn Severien.

Roquette and Algama are developing prototypes of food products that they say closely reflect both the nutritional concerns of consumers and major market trends. These products will be nutritious as well as delicious, the companies claim,  at the same time as also addressing today’s food issues (special diets, allergies and intolerances).

Algama’s first offer, introduced in 2014, is described as an innovative spiruline-based beverage called Springwave.

For Algama, the support provided by Roquette will make it possible to consolidate its expertise in developing microalgae-based products.

For Roquette, working with Algama will mean getting food products made with algility microalgae into consumers’ hands faster.

Roquette explains that microalgae are ancient, microscopic plants. First appearing on Earth around 2.5 billion years ago, they are commonly eaten in Japan. They are rich in nutrients that give them remarkable health benefits. Spirulina and chlorella are some of the best-known microalgae.

Roquette now supplies chlorella to food industry professionals under the brand name ‘algility’. This range of naturally-derived ingredients is said to be perfectly suited to consumers seeking a healthy diet and lifestyle.
