sunflower-yellow-isolated-white-40625464Food manufacturers looking to provide long-chain omega-3s (EPA and DHA) in their products can now do so with an oil blend made with high oleic sunflower oil produced from identify-preserved (IdP) conventionally-bred (non-GMO) high oleic sunflower seeds, fish oil and proprietary antioxidants.

IngreVita High Oleic Sunflower and EPA/DHA Omega-3 Oil (IngreVita HO Sun) is the latest and second IngreVita product from Cargill. The original IngreVita, containing canola oil, was launched in 2014. EPA and DHA omega-3s are fatty acids that play an important role in heart health and brain development.

“Helping our customers succeed by providing them choices for ingredients is what drove the development of IngreVita HO Sun,” said Kristine Sanschagrin, marketing manager of Specialty Seeds and Oils Cargill. “Some of our customers choose to offer consumers non-GMO products and this is one such option for those customers”.

EPA and DHA are long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids that our bodies do not efficiently make. Average consumption of EPA and DHA in the United States is well below the American Heart Association’s recommendation of 250-500 mg per day from fish. For the general population, increased consumption of EPA and DHA through functional foods, as part of a balanced diet, may help to support health and wellness.

IngreVita HO Sun is stored at ambient temperature, and is said to be easy to use, offer good shelf stability and does not introduce off-flavours.
