Spilanthes Acmella Extract: A Natural Botox Alternative?

3 Jun 2024

Botox, which is also known as botulinum toxin, has become widely known because of its capacity to temporarily immobilize facial muscles, thereby diminishing the visibility of wrinkles and fine lines. However, some people are wary of using this potent neurotoxin due to potential side effects and the desire for more natural alternatives. Enter Spilanthes acmella, a small flowering herb that has gained attention for its muscle-relaxing properties similar to Botox. 1

According to a review, Spilanthes acmella has potential applications in anti-wrinkle and anti-aging products due to its muscle relaxant and collagen strengthening properties. Some key points regarding its use as an anti-wrinkle product:

• S. acmella extract contains bioactive compounds like spilanthol and alkamides that act as fast-acting muscle relaxants. This can help accelerate the repair of functional wrinkles by relaxing subcutaneous muscles.

• The extract is proposed to stimulate, reorganize and strengthen the collagen network in the skin, contributing to an anti-wrinkle effect.

• The vasorelaxant activity of S. acmella, mediated by nitric oxide, may also play a role in enhancing its lifting and anti-wrinkle effects on the skin. 2

Mechanism of Action Like Botox:

Spilanthol, derived from the Acmella oleracea plant, shows promise as an ingredient in anti-wrinkle products due to its ability to relax facial muscles. When applied locally or subcutaneously in formulations, either in its pure form or as an extract from Acmella, spilanthol works by blocking the release of acetylcholine. The neurotransmitter acetylcholine is responsible for causing muscular contractions. By inhibiting its release, spilanthol temporarily reduces muscle activity, leading to smoother-looking skin with diminished wrinkles and fine lines. 3 4

In an analysis featured in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, researchers conducted a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial. Their findings revealed that using a topical product containing Acmella extract notably enhanced the look of facial wrinkles and fine lines within a four-week period. 5

• Another study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology demonstrated that a cream containing Acmella extract was effective in reducing the depth of forehead wrinkles and improving overall skin texture. 4

• One study investigates the vasorelaxant and antioxidant properties of Spilanthes acmella extracts. Results indicate that these extracts induce vasorelaxation in rat thoracic aorta, albeit less effectively than acetylcholine-induced nitric oxide (NO) vasorelaxation.

o The extracts' vasorelaxant effects involve endothelium-induced NO and prostacyclin production. The ethyl acetate extract demonstrates immediate vasorelaxation and potent antioxidant activity, while the chloroform extract exhibits the highest vasorelaxation and antioxidation.

o These findings suggest Spilanthes acmella extracts as potential sources of vasodilators and antioxidants. 6

Safety and Side Effects:

Although S. acmella is typically deemed safe for topical application, certain individuals might encounter minor side effects like skin irritation, redness, or tingling. It's important to conduct a patch test prior to introducing any new product to assess the likelihood of allergic reactions.

S. acmella may show promising potential as a natural alternative to Botox for temporarily reducing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. NaturMed Scientific deals with the best qualities of Acmella Extract. While more research is needed to fully understand its long-term efficacy and safety, the available clinical studies suggest that this ancient herb may provide a viable option for those seeking a more natural approach to skincare.
