Phytochemindo began as early as 1977 as a research division dedicated to identifying exotic plants which could be used for the production of modern herbal drugs. The late Drs. Wim Kalona, an entrepreneur and proprietor of several pharmaceutical companies with Prof. DR. Oei Ban Liang, a distinguished biotechnology and organic chemistry expert were inspired by the abundance of herbal plants and the deeply rooted tradition of herbal remedies in Indonesia.
Both shared a vision of looking forward and being responsive to changes and developments of herbal treatment in the pharmaceutical world. They concentrated on the use of nontoxic traditional drugs of plants origin, the preparation of crude extracts from these plant materials, and they continued further with the isolation of the physiologically active compounds. Their efforts led to the scientific modernization of traditional medicines.
