Bench Maji Forest Coffee Producer Farmers’ Cooperative Union (also known as Bench Maji or BMFCU) is a 2nd-grade producer organization based in the Bench Maji zone of south-western Ethiopia. The union was originally formed in 2005 by 14 founding cooperatives, which united to commercialize their coffee and market their products internationally. 67 cooperatives are now affiliated with BMFCU. The union’s 9 Fairtrade-certified cooperatives with total certified farmer number of 4,894 out of which 698 are female. These 9 cooperatives were certified in 2015.
In total, over 15% of BMFCU’s certified members are women. Members also cultivate several other products including honey, spices, and grains. The union’s cooperatives are based in the Bench Maji forest region where wild coffee trees grow naturally under shade. Their coffee is fully organic and some of BMFCU’s coffee is left to grow naturally with no intervention until it is harvested.
