Erythritol has smaller molecular weight than maltitol, sorbitol and xylitol. It is easily absorbed in the small intestine, and most of it can enter the blood circulation. However, because lack of the enzyme system that can metabolizes erythritol, the erythritol that enters the blood cannot be digested and degraded, and can only be excreted from the urine through the kidneys, which determines the low caloric value of erythritol.
