The plantation industry, particularly palm oil, is one of the main pillars of the Malaysian economy. The palm oil sector has contributed significantly to the Malaysian economy, contributing 3.1% of the total Malaysian GDP in 2022. The sector also provides a continuous inflow of export earnings through the export of raw commodity and value-added products to the global market. In 2022, palm oil contributed $28.7 billion (equivalent to RM130.2 billion) in export earnings for Malaysia and accounted for 23% of the world’s palm oil production and 31% of total palm oil exports.
In addressing the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) aspects in the palm oil industry, the Malaysian government has established the mandatory Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil (MSPO) certification scheme, which addresses sustainability, environmental protection, social responsibility, and workers’ rights, among others.
The Malaysian MSPO certification scheme which was introduced in 2013, constantly evolves with continuous improvement with its latest revision in 2022 focusing on deforestation.WS
