A new high-CBD raw material is available to the nutraceuticals industry. Bedrocan, an experienced cannabis cultivator, explains why non-hemp CBD of consistent content is an advantage.

Bedrocan, a Dutch cultivator known for its pharmaceutical-grade medicinal cannabis, has recently launched a high-CBD raw material that brings opportunities for a cost-effective and quality production of CBD-based nutraceuticals. The product, branded as Bedrolina®, contains up to 14% CBD and less than 1% THC, and is available in 'cut flos' (milled) form and in whole dried flower form.
CBD products have become increasingly popular in the nutraceuticals industry, and the market is expanding as more jurisdictions regulate CBD across the globe. However, the options for reliable raw materials with consistent contents and high CBD levels seem limited. So, how can manufacturers source quality raw materials to improve their CBD products?
Many manufacturers of CBD-based products mostly rely on hemp-derived raw materials as it is the most available option in many jurisdictions. However, these raw materials usually contain a mix of plant materials cultivated in different manners and with varied levels of active ingredients to achieve a certain CBD percentage. Bedrocan’s CEO, Jaap Erkelens, argues that hemp varieties are not the best choice for manufacturing CBD products: “Hemp varieties often contain a lower CBD percentage, which means that more biomass is needed. In addition, these hemp varieties are not suitable for medicinal applications.”
As the world’s most experienced cultivator of cannabis with consistent levels of active ingredients, Bedrocan has launched this new high-CBD variety to offer a reliable and quality-controlled cannabis raw material for the nutraceuticals industry. The company’s unique cultivation methods ensure a non-hemp CBD with standardised levels of active ingredients, batch-to-batch. This allows manufacturers to use less plant material in the manufacturing of CBD products in comparison with hemp-derived raw materials. Additionally, Bedrocan has a history of consistent supply availability, an important advantage in a market with growing demand.
Bedrocan's expertise, which is rooted in the agricultural traditions of the northern Netherlands, has been built on the cultivation of a variety of plants under standardised and controlled conditions. The company is constantly looking to improve its cultivation expertise through an active R&D program that conducts research into plant genetics to enhance the level of active ingredients, including rare cannabinoids (e.g., CBG, CBN).
Besides growing cannabis indoors in the Netherlands, and recently in Denmark, the company has also started an outdoor cultivation project, growing high-CBD and other novel medicinal plants through a partnership in Suriname. Contract manufacturing services are also among the company’s scope of activities.
Bedrocan will be present with a booth at Vitafoods Europe 2025 to present its portfolio specifically targeted at the nutraceuticals industry.
