Biophelion makes natural flavour ingredients by fermentation, so they no longer have to be taken from the wild.
Not everything natural is good for nature. Massoia lactone, the creamy coconut note in dairy, plant based and confectionery products, comes from the bark of a wild tree in Papua, listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN. Harvesting the bark kills the tree.
We produce the same molecule by fermentation in Jena, Germany, with a defined composition and consistent quality independent of harvests. Massoia lactone launches at Fi Europe 2026; delta-decalactone follows in 2027.
Founded in 2025 out of academic research, Biophelion is a team in SPRIND's Circular Biomanufacturing Challenge. Production runs under EU food hygiene certification (Regulation (EC) 852/2004).
We want to meet flavour houses, distributors, food manufacturers and application partners.
