Lipids are not merely an energy source in infant formula. They contribute essential fatty acids, support the delivery of fat-soluble vitamins, influence digestibility and help shape the product’s sensory and physical performance. Because infant formula may be the sole source of nutrition during the first months of life, its lipid system must meet an unusually demanding combination of nutritional, safety, processing and regulatory requirements. The challenge is therefore not to select one “best” oil, but to refining, transport, formula manufacture, storage and preparation. For ingredient suppliers and formula producers, success depends on balancing fatty-acid composition, contaminant minimisation, oxidative stability, functionality, traceability and cost—without compromising the high level of protection expected for this vulnerable consumer group.
