Specialist ingredients companies Thew Arnott and Flo Chemical have introduced Flo Zein to the European market. Flo Zein is a range of all-natural corn protein films developed to coat nuts and enhance shelf life.

Vegan, gluten-free and lactose-free, the range includes Zein and Cozeen which can be applied to nuts such as peanuts, roasted peanuts and walnuts as well as dried fruit to act as a moisture, oxygen, microbial and insect barrier. As a result, not only is shelf life said to be improved for the products during long term storage, but their taste, freshness and quality is also retained.

Control tests have shown that nuts coated in Flo Zein maintain a better appearance, aroma and texture in comparison to products which have been coated with other plant-based coatings. Dried fruits retain their moisture level and taste when coated with products from the Flo Zein range.

The new corn protein film also acts as a natural adhesive to attach salt or other flavours, meaning there is no need for any other sticking agent, therefore keeping the ingredients label as ‘clean’ as possible.

Zein and Cozeen are non-GMO as well as being Kosher certified and Halal compliant.
