Urolithin A

Urolithin A (UA) is a natural postbiotic compound produced by the metabolism of gut microbiota. It is not directly present in food but is formed when gut bacteria convert ellagitannins—polyphenolic compounds found in certain foods—into Urolithin A. The chemical structure of UA features an α-benzocoumarin skeleton, with a molecular formula of C₁₃H₈O₄ and a molecular weight of 228.20 g/mol.

Urolithin A is one of the few compounds that has been carried through to randomized, placebo-controlled human trials and has shown measurable effects on muscle and mitochondrial biology. It promotes the clearance of damaged mitochondria and the generation of new healthy mitochondria, demonstrating potential value in aging intervention and the prevention and treatment of multisystem diseases.
