rows-soy-plants-field-19998131Last year the Round Table on Responsible Soy (RTRS) says it registered the purchase of over 1.3 million metric tonnes of certified responsible soy, nearly 50% higher than in 2013 and an all-time record.

The growing commitment to responsible soy of both buyers and producers around the world is also reflected, said the organisation, in the rapid acceleration in membership with 29 new members, growing to a total of 181 in 2014.

In November 2014, the RTRS reached the symbolic milestone of 1 million RTRS Credits sold (equivalent to 1 million metric tons of responsible soy). Thanks to a considerable number of buyers from different countries and sectors, an all-time record purchase of responsible soy was achieved by the end of 2014. The total amount of purchased volume of RTRS Certified Soy has grown from 891k metric tonnes in 2013 to over 1.300k metric tonnes in 2014.

Argentina produced more than 436k metric tonnes of certified soy and thereby almost doubled its production compared to 2013. Brazil remains the biggest producer of RTRS Certified Soy, producing 840k metric tonnes in 2014, which is 62% of all RTRS Certified Soy.

Other highlights include the Canadian and Chinese National Interpretations of the RTRS Standard and the first certification of producers from both countries. Their certification brings the total of countries producing responsible soy to eight. In 2014, The Netherlands and Scandinavia were the largest buyers of responsible soy with 624k and 476k metric tonnes respectively. In 2014, RTRS also celebrated buyers joining from upcoming markets such as India and China.
